Pre-Education

Pre-Education

About Our Program

Is it your dream to become a classroom teacher or a paraprofessional? Then our Pre-Education program is for you.

Our program is designed to prepare you to continue to study at the university level to achieve teacher certification in Special Education, Elementary Education, and Secondary Education, as well as the early childhood ZS endorsement. Or if you are studying to become a paraprofessional, our program will prepare you for immediate employment with public and private elementary and secondary schools. By the time you finish, you will have completed two years of coursework that can be applied towards a bachelor's degree at a 4-year college/university, as well as gained practical experience in the classroom.

The Pre-Education program contains associate degree programs in five different areas of education. We offer associate degree programs in Child Development, Pre-Elementary Education, Pre-Secondary Education, Pre-Special Education, and Education Paraprofessional. With the exception of Education Paraprofessional, which prepares you to begin your career immediately, the rest are designed to help you gain your bachelors degree at a university. For this reason, a critical component of our program includes our articulation agreements with other institutions. We offer seamless transfer to many university schools of education, including Eastern Michigan University (EMU), University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-Dearborn), and Wayne State University. If you are planning on transferring to a different university, our Pre-Education faculty are excited to help with this process.

I truly feel that I have HFC's Pre-Education program to thank for how prepared I felt once I arrived at EMU. Once you decide which school you plan on transferring to, it is so easy to follow the transfer guide for your particular transfer university. I maximized the number of classes I could take at a lower tuition rate that do not compromise on quality.

Taking classes with Dr. Lanzon was particularly helpful. The most useful skill I learned was to read, comprehend, and analyze research articles because it becomes such a crucial skill when taking advanced classes in your program. This approach translates to working until you acquire the skills necessary to become a qualified teacher. The opportunity to have a class with a practicum was also very beneficial to students in the program.

It is very similar to the many classes taken in conjunction with a practicum which you will continue to take after transferring to a 4-year university. Learning how to apply the skills taught in the classroom and to work closely with seasoned educators is an essential part of any education program."

HFC has many programs to offer students, one being the Pre-Education program. My experience with the Pre-Education program is something I will always keep close with me from the overall experience, especially building a bond with many of the professors.

My first semester was pre-requisites to prepare me for the program. Being a mother my schedule is pretty hectic, although HFC had classes to meet my schedule. The classes offered in the Pre-Education program allowed me to hands on learn. Professors taught us the material and allowed us to get up and teach back! We were involved in our own learning.

One of my personal favorite things about the program was the amount of time the staff put into making sure we are always one step closer to our dream. The program held many different meetings on campus and university's would come out and talk about the school and allow you to sit down and go over your transcripts. The Pre-Education program is a program that put my dreams first and made them possible. I never walked alone, I always had someone that was able to guide me in the direction I needed."

I had always loved working with children and knew that I wanted to further educate myself in the field of elementary education. I decided to enroll at HFC with much trepidation; I wasn’t sure how I could balance family life, a job, and school. Thankfully, from my first day of enrollment, I knew I had made the right decision.

Each instructor that I was blessed to have crossed paths with in the Pre-Education department continued to fuel my drive to do my best and become my best. Even while knowing that it was children I wanted to work with, the amazing professors found something deeper inside of me, a passion to work with special needs children. Since my time at HFC, I have been passionately pursuing a career with autistic children and plan on furthering my studies in special education."
