Henry Ford College Strategic Plan Initiative

Advising Support Services

The more students are actively engaged in all aspects of college life, the more likely they are to remain enrolled and on track to timely credential completion. Proactive advising can facilitate this engagement and connection. With this approach, advisors monitor student data and initiate contact with students early and consistently to build relationships and regularly discuss their academic and personal success. These relationships form the foundation of a support system that will sustain the student from entry point to goal attainment.

Initiative Progress

  • Assess current structure and function of the Academic Advising and Early Alert offices using data from the National Institute of Student Success and survey results and benchmarking against national standards.
  • Create a staffing level that allows for proactive, case-based advising and a timely response to student needs. (In progress)
  • Implement technology that allows for more effective service to students and provides increased opportunities for students to take an active ownership of their own academic progress (see Predictive Analytics initiative for more information). (in progress)
  • Update Academic Advising web page, ensuring accuracy of information, and adding more interactive, informative content. (In progress)
  • Document all department procedures while developing common training for advisors and standard uses for advising platforms. (In progress)
