Michael Abney
Michael Abney was appointed as Head Baseball Coach in 2018. The Abney era is defined by an instructional and aggressive hitting, defense, pitching, base running and weight training program. As a result, Hawks baseball is emphasizing greater execution, greater preparation and greater attention to detail, making the team contenders for state and regional recognition.
In 2019, Coach Abney implemented the VDR Program (Velocity, Durability & Recovery) for the growth and development of the team pitchers. With the support, knowledge and experience of an excellent assistant coaching staff, HFC plays an extremely competitive caliber of baseball that is required to achieve post-season status in the conference.
Coach Abney's career at HFC started in 2011 as an assistant coach for five years under Coach Steven Brown, followed by another assistant coaching stint for three years under Coach Tim Leighton. His main areas of responsibility were outfield and base running. During his years at Henry Ford he has had direct responsibility of the Outfielders which has produced two National Gold Gloves and one Regional Gold Glove winner.
Prior to joining HFC, Coach Abney was President of the Southfield (MI) Cardinals Baseball Organization and coached their senior level teams for 15 years. These teams participated on national stages in events such as Perfect Game, R.B.I., M.V.P. and other tournaments sponsored by nationally sanctioned organizations. In 2015, Coach Abney created the Southfield Showcase and has been instrumental in helping over 35 players earn scholarships to play at NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA schools to further their academic and athletic careers.
A graduate of Pershing High school in Detroit, Coach Abney Received his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Michigan State University, and continued his education at Central Michigan University where he received his master's degree in Administration.
