St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program teaches safety and supports important cause
The HFCC Child Development Center will join thousands of pre-schools, daycares and other groups across the country in sponsoring a St. Jude Trike-A-Thon event during the week of April 14 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers.
The week-long event teaches bike and riding-toy safety lessons through the use of interactive stories that feature the characters Bikewell Bear and Pedals the Bunny. At the end of the week, students will bring their tricycles to school and practice their newly-learned safety lessons on Thursday, April 17, in the courtyard behind the Liberal Arts Building at 9:30 to 11 a.m.; 3 to 4 p.m.; and 5 to 6 p.m.
In addition to safety lessons, kids learn about helping others, including the patients of St. Jude. Families, friends and the community team up to support the hospital by pledging a donation for St. Jude Trike-A-Thon Week. Because no patient is ever denied treatment from St. Jude because of an inability to pay, funds from public fundraisers such as the HFCC Child Development Center/St. Jude Trike-A-Thon help the hospital’s mission of finding cures and saving children.
This is the 10th year that the HFCC Child Development Center has held the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program. The HFCC Child Development Center has raised more than $8,000 since it began in 2004.
“I’m proud that our kids are able to help give hope to thousands of children battling cancer and other deadly diseases at St. Jude,” said Cristina Greco, event coordinator.
Joining young children across the United States in the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program is cable network Nick Jr. and character favorite, Dora the Explorer. A supporter of St. Jude since 2007, Nick Jr. airs PSAs featuring Dora inviting children to participate in the program. The Dora PSAs can also be viewed by visiting www.stjude.nickjr.com.
Since its inception in 1983, the St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program has raised more than $87 million.
