Power Engineering

HFCC will host four information sessions for the College’s Power/Building Engineering Program. These sessions take place in Room T-107 of the Technical Building on the main campus at 1 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Saturday, March 29;
  • Saturday, April 5;
  • Saturday, April 12; and
  • Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m.

HFCC is a partner in the Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD). The HFCC Power/Building Engineering Program is working on efforts to educate and train qualified graduates to fill gaps in the power generation/energy workforce. The CEWD has predicted that approximately 46 percent of the workforce (roughly 200,000 highly skilled workers) may need to be replaced soon due to retirement or attrition.

Faculty from HFCC’s Power/Building Engineering Program and Energy Technology Dept. will host the following information sessions, which are sponsored by Consumers Energy:

  • Getting into Energy – How to Prepare for Power Plant Operator Positions: This session covers power plant operator positions in heating plants, industrial power plants and utility power generation plants found at American Electric Power, DTE, and Consumers Energy.
  • How to Prepare for Licenses: This session is for a Licensed Boiler Operator, Licensed Stationary Engineer, Licensed Building Operation, and Maintenance Technician positions found in industrial power plants, power plants found at schools and colleges, as well as office buildings and major facilities.
  • Learn About HFCC Power/Building Engineer Programs: Interested individuals will have an opportunity to learn about the HFCC admissions process, the requirements for licenses in this field and to ask questions.
  • They can also tour the HFCC Co-Generation, hands-on power plant facility and get the chance to operate live equipment and systems in the Power/Building Engineering labs under supervision.

    Admission sessions may be set up by appointment with HFCC counselors at 313.845.9611 or set up with Power/Building Engineering faculty while attending one of the information sessions.

    Although these information sessions are free and open to the public, pre-registration is required to attend. To register, please contact James Martini at 313.845.6453 or jmartini@hfcc.edu. Martini will also be available for questions and further information.
