Demented Detroit Jan. 24-March 21

“Demented Detroit: Contemporary Cartoons and Comics from the Motor City” will be on display in HFCC's Sisson Gallery from Friday, Jan. 24, to Thursday, March 21.

There will be an Opening Reception on Jan. 24 from 6-8 p.m. The Sisson Gallery is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Demented Detroit” features the work of several local artists, including James Anderson, Suzanne Baumann, Sean Bieri, Matt Feazell, Victor Green, Kelly Guillory, Jane Irwin, Kelly Larson, Crystal Mielcarek, Vicki Shepherd and Ted Woods. Their artwork has appeared in independent comic books, advertisements and digital media. Additionally, Bieri serves as the guest curator for “Demented Detroit.”

“It's never been true that cartoons, in all their forms, were strictly kid stuff. From sexy Betty Boop and the funny-papers violence of Dick Tracy, to editorial page broadsides and underground comic books, cartooning has always had an audience among grown-ups. As boundaries between ‘high’ and ‘low-brow’ art have relaxed over the years, serious graphic novels have landed on bestseller lists, street art has appeared in galleries, and comic strips and animation from around the world have been re-evaluated,” explained Bieri.

This event is free and open to the public. For further information, please call 313.845.6485.
