Interior Design Career Night March 13

Students work in the HFCC Interior Design lab

Six interior design professionals – including three HFCC alumni – will speak about their experiences at the Interior Design Career Night Wednesday, March 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Room F-219 at the MacKenzie Fine Arts Building.

The six guest speakers will discuss how their education prepared them for careers in interior design, and the possible directions an aspiring interior designer’s career can take. Specific discussion topics include:
• National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) licensing;
• transferring to a four-year university;
• starting your own business;
• the importance of affiliations and networking;
• software programs for résumés; and
• preparing student documentation for portfolios.

The six guest speakers include:
• Belqes Al-Emad: Al-Emad graduated with an associate’s degree in Interior Design from HFCC in 2010. Currently a student at Eastern Michigan University, Al-Emad has been an independent designer for three years.
• Michelle Phillips-Baker: Phillips graduated with an associate’s degree in Interior Design from HFCC in 2011. She has been the sole proprietor of Lee Custom Interiors for 16 years.
• Dennis Robare: A Lawrence Technological University alumnus, Robare has been the president/owner of Dennis P. Robare Architects E.C. for 23 years. Additionally, he served as an interior design area coordinator at Wayne State University (WSU) for 16 years.
• Tina Rossi: Rossi graduated with an associate’s degree in Interior Design from HFCC in 2010. She has been an interior designer for three years, and has worked for Gorman’s Furniture, a Michigan-based furniture manufacturer.
• Christina Bliss: A 2000 WSU alumnus who is NCIDQ certified, Bliss has been an interior designer/project manager for 15 years. Additionally, she is an adjunct faculty member in the WSU Interior Design Program.
• Anastasiya Semets: A 2011 WSU alumnus, Semets has been a CAD/millwork designer for two years. She has also held a contractual position with MCS Custom Design Cabinets, Inc. in Westland, Mich.
