HFC’s Industrial Sewing Certification Program

As the result of a partnership between the HFC Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC), the Detroit Garment Group Guild (DG3), and the Makers Coalition, HFC now offers an Industrial Sewing Certification Program (ISCP).

This ISCP is the first ever in the state of Michigan. It is a direct response to the needs for skilled industrial sewers throughout businesses across the state. The first class of students will begin the ISCP this September at HFC M-TEC, located on the East Campus at 3601 Schaefer Rd. in Dearborn. Real-world experiences from a variety of cut and sew manufacturing industries, including automotive and apparel, have been implemented into the ISCP curriculum.

Southfield-based Lear has signed on as a major corporate sponsor and has secured the machinery for the classroom. SEMCA Michigan Works! will recruit and screen potential students, as well as secure funding for those who qualify. It will also assist with job placement for students who complete the ISCP. DG3 has reached out to cut and sew manufacturers across Michigan, securing commitments from these companies to interview ISCP students upon graduation.

Based in Minnesota, The Makers Coalition DG3 is a coalition of businesses, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and service-providers that work together to build a trained workforce in the cut and sew industry, as well as restore and rebuild the industrial sewing heritage of America for today and future generations.

“There is growth in the industrial sewing industry as it relates to the automotive industry and car interiors, such as upholstery. We are working with employers in that area to provide them with a skilled workforce that they can hire to meet that growing demand,” said Reginald Witherspoon, HFC interim director of M-TEC.
