Kareem Hogan named HFC women’s basketball head coach

Kareem Hogan

Kareem Hogan has been named the new head coach of the Henry Ford College (HFC) women’s basketball team, effective immediately.

Hogan replaces Kaylee Patton, who was hired in May. An unforeseen family matter prevented her from assuming coaching duties.

“On behalf of the entire College, I wish Coach Patton the best at this difficult time,” said Hawks Athletic Director Rochelle Taylor. “I am very pleased that Coach Hogan is ready to step up and take over as the new head coach.”

A lifelong Detroiter, Hogan is a 1998 alumnus of Mumford High School in Detroit, where he played basketball for four years. He attended Wayne County Community College District in Detroit on a basketball scholarship, earning his associate degree in general studies in 2000. Hogan transferred to Marygrove College in Detroit, where he played basketball for two years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in English in 2003.

Currently, he is the dean of students at Mumford, where he has coached basketball for 16 years, serving as the women’s basketball coach. Under his leadership, Mumford won the Public School League title this past season, for the second year in a row. For two years, Hogan was the assistant coach of the Oakland Community College women’s basketball team. His new role at HFC is his college head coaching job.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to be the head coach at HFC. It’s a dream come true,” said Hogan. “The team has had its challenges, and I aim to turn that around. I’m very eager to get started. I did it at Mumford, and I plan to do it at HFC.”

Hogan’s first priority is to make sure all his players are academically successful, earning the credits and grade point average to transfer to 4-year educational institutions after they complete their program as HFC Hawks.

“Athletically, my goal is putting the best possible players on the court, which is where recruiting comes in,” said Hogan. “I want them to compete at a higher level. I can’t wait for the season to begin.”
