The HFC Theatre Arts department will hold open auditions for the musical Mamma Mia! on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and Thursday, Dec. 12, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the Adray Auditorium (F-100) in the MacKenzie Fine Arts Center (Bldg. F). The musical will run April 23-May 3, 2020.

Mamma Mia! is based on the songs of the international 1970s band ABBA, which include “Dancing Queen,” “Take a Chance on Me,” “Super Trouper,” “Lay All Your Love on Me,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” and many more.

The plot takes place on the Greek Islands, where Sophie, who’s engaged to be married, invites three men to her wedding without telling her mother Donna. One of these three men – architect Sam Carmichael, sailor Bill Anderson, and banker Harry Bright – is her biological father, whom she wants to walk her down the aisle on her wedding day.

The musical premiered in 1999 in London and has grossed more than $4 billion since its debut. In 2008, it was adapted into a film starring Oscar winner Meryl Streep (Kramer vs. Kramer), Amanda Seyfried (Big Love), Emmy winner Christine Baranski (The Good Fight), former 007 Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye), Oscar winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Stellan Skarsgård (The Avengers), Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger), and Oscar nominee Julie Walters (the Harry Potter films).

The movie grossed more than $615 million, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of 2008. It was followed by a 2018 sequel called Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. The majority of the original cast returned, and they were joined by Grammy-winning singer/actress Cher (Moonstruck) and Oscar nominee Andy Garcia (The Untouchables).
