HFC’s Black Male and Quintessential Unique Essence of Ebony Necessary Sisters (QUEENS) Focus Group (BMQFG) will begin weekly meetings for the Fall 2023 semester Wednesday, September 6, from noon to 2:00 p.m. in Room N-011 in the basement of the Campus Safety Building (Building N on the main campus).

The meetings, which will be held every Wednesday until December 13, will be held in-person. Students can also attend meetings via Zoom

The BMQFG Fall 2023 meeting schedule is as follows:

  • September 6, 13, 20, 27
  • October 4, 11, 18, 25
  • November 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
  • December 6, 13

HFC sociology instructor Dr. Kalvin DaRonne Harvell is the faculty advisor for BMQFG. Chardin Claybourne and Dr. Courtney Matthews are BMQFG’s faculty advisors. The group's purpose is to challenge and change the accepted narrative regarding Black academic success. The group provides an atmosphere in which students are comfortable, and through strength, can learn to deal with discomfiture. The group exposes them to opportunities within and outside HFC to help them grow academically and professionally.

In addition to its regular weekly meeting, BMQFG also has three special events scheduled for the Fall 2023 semester, including:

  • Excellence of the Black Woman Conference on Friday, Oct. 20 (Time TBA)
  • Community Read of The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois (Syllabus and discussion dates TBA)

“The Black Male and QUEENS Focus Group welcomes back HFC students for another exciting, eventful academic year,” said Claybourne. “We have a slate of wonderful sessions planned, including guest speakers and presenters from within and outside of the College. We look forward to continuing our tradition and mission of supporting students’ academic and social support needs and preparing them for success – both at HFC and beyond.”

All HFC students are welcome and invited to attend BMQFG meetings.
