About Our Program

The Biotechnology program at HFC is specifically designed to train you for technician positions in biotechnology-based industries and institutions. After successfully completing our program, you will be proficient in the use of many types of modern biotechnology instrumentation and technologies and well-prepared for employment in a changing workplace.

Our curriculum was developed in partnership with regional biotechnology employers and incorporates the technical and workplace competencies that these employers look for in their new hires. You will receive laboratory training in DNA and protein extraction and analysis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), spectrophotometry, gel electrophoresis, gene cloning, and much, much more. You will also gain experience using our state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, including thermalcyclers, spectrophotometers, micropipettes, centrifuges, digital imagers, and chromatography systems.

The Biotechnology program also provides you with experience outside of the classroom. We provide internship opportunities with a variety of regional employers. Previous sites have included Ash Stevens, Eastern Michigan University, Enzo Life Sciences, The Great Lakes Stem Cell Commercialization Center, NSF International, Wayne State University, The University of Michigan, and The University of Michigan–Dearborn.

Student Testimonials

    Biotechnology AAS

I lost my manufacturing job during a bad economic period. HFC’s Biotech program gave me the skills to pursue a passion I once dreamed of. I now happily work at Enzo Life Sciences in Ann Arbor because of the talented professors at Henry Ford College.

    Biotechnology Certificate

I was an older adult returning to college and wasn't sure what to expect. But the professors were very supportive, knowledgeable, and experienced. I was fortunate enough to get hired through contacts I made during my internship at The University of Michigan. It became quite clear that HFC's Biotechnology program is definitely state-of-the-art. I have worked alongside people who are doing research using the very same techniques and equipment we learned at HFC. I'm so grateful for the opportunity that this program and internship provided, which has opened up a new world for me!
