The "America at War" Series
HIST 244 – 99
Sea Power, the History of the U.S. Navy
Sea Power, the History of the U. S. Navy provides a panoramic view of the contributions the U.S. Navy has had on the development and success of our nation. In addition, the online class looks at the logistical support provided by the Merchant Marine, the role the U.S. Coast Guard during World War Two and as an integral member of the Homeland Defense Department and the development and implementation of the Marine Corps.
Each week opens with an introduction by the instructor about the week's related topics. The students are assigned readings from three textbooks. The books include a survey book of the navy, a second textbook is a collection of human interest stories about the contributions of the enlisted sailor. The third book looks at five significant battles in our naval history.
After completing their reading assignments the students are challenged by a “discussion question” that requires an answer plus a required feedback from their peers. This phase of the course generates some lively discussions and contributes to the overall learning experience.
The second assignment requires the student to write a 300-500 word “critical thinking” essay based on a question generated by the instructor. In the essay the students are required to cite examples from their reading assignments.
Additional information included in a week 's packet includes period music, pictures and recommended web sites for those students desiring additional information.
