Students interested in taking ANY of the following courses should consider the advantages of a Learning Community that innovatively links TWO of these courses together. Often the classes are blocked together (e.g., 10:08-11:00 and 11:08-12:00), and the assignments are linked by instructors who cooperate to connect course materials and objectives.

In learning communities, students enjoy a deeper learning experience, gain a more comprehensive understanding of the course themes and benefit from improved retention of what they learn. Research has shown that learning communities, on average, lead to an overall improvement in students’ classroom performance, grades and persistence. Learning communities also allow students to build stronger social and intellectual bonds with their classmates, thereby increasing their chances of academic success.
How Can Learning Communities Help You Succeed
- In a Learning Community, the same students enrolled in one course are also enrolled in the other. This helps build connections and forms better support networks among the students.
- In a Learning Community, the two instructors work together to integrate course topics and assignments. Students learn more because the classes reinforce one another.
- Assignments and assignment schedules are coordinated to help students succeed in both classes. For example, students enrolled in a Learning Community will significantly decrease their chances of having major exams and/or assignments due on the same day, particularly within the two linked courses.
- Research on Learning Communities at other colleges shows that students participating in these linked courses are more successful in each class and in college overall.
