Theatre The Music Man Mythical Creatures

Work in the theatre can take many forms in many arenas. Actors perform on stage, in TV shows, film, commercials and on the web. Behind the scenes skilled professionals are required for scenic, costume and lighting design, theatre and costume technology, producing, directing and managing the box office, house and the performance itself.

Experience in theatre can be helpful in a number of other careers as well, including broadcasting and film, music, dance, public relations, skilled trades, education and writing.

HFCC's Associate in Arts in Theatre provides a sound basis for understanding the theory and practice of the theatrical arts.Strudents are offered pre-professional training in theory, performance, and production. HFCC graduates can move on to bachelor's degree programs in various theatre specialties or dual majors (with another area of the arts, for example) at a university or conservatory.

For details on past productions, visit the Theatre website at www.hfcctheater.org.

The Virtual Theatricality Lab

HFCC's Theatre Department has a specialty area known as the Virtual Theatricality Lab which has produced three innovative live-theatre productions that incorporate state-of-the art technology. The Tempest, the first production of its kind in the nation, was selected for performance at the Kennedy Center’s American College Theater Festival, which honors the best in American college and university theatre.

The Skriker, the second production from the Lab, was the first worldwide to use 3D stereoscopic projection with motion-capture virtual characters integrated with virtual scenery in a live stage production.

The VTL is currently producing a children’s play, Dinosaurus.

The Virtual Theatricality Lab and the Film Industry

The Lab has several aspects that apply to the film industry. Students are currently taking classes in Motion Capture Performance and Production and the VTL is also HFCC offering a Motion Capture certificate. In addition, students will work with Hollywood stuntman and motion capture actor Dan Lemieux (see his film credits at imdb.com).

The VTL also has classes in film acting, 3-D stereo, digital special effects Science Fiction and Horror Films, and greenscreen production and performance.

HFCC's New Playwright's Workshop

The New Playwright’s Workshop was founded in 1996 by Director of Theater Dr. George Popovich. The program, presented every other year, operates in conjunction with The Student Directed One Acts Program.

The workshop has produced over 30 new one act and full-length plays. Its first production was “Vincent, which premiered in June, 1996, written and directed by Eric Daniel Moore.

The most unusual production was perhaps "Freak Show Brain,’ a collection of monologues centering around the concept of a brain that has the ability to absorb the most heinous secrets of anyone who confesses to it. The play was written and directed By Leah Ankeny and presented in June 1998.

The most recent production was student Nick Kabrovich’s, “The F Show,” which premiered in June, 2007. For more information, contact George Popovich. (See below.)
