Fundamentals of Speaking

In this course students acquire skills that are transferable to many other areas of their lives. The course is designed to be challenging and meaningful because public speaking skills are necessary to function as a contributing and responsible citizen in a democratic society. These skills are also important for personal, professional and public success.

Although there are no prerequisites for this course and no placement tests, students should possess a good command of the English language.The course consists of readings, lectures, activities and speaking assignments.

Students are expected to acquire the organizational and delivery skills for effective presentations of extemporaneous speeches and other forms of oral and written communication.

Examinations, written work, class participation, speaking assignments and class attendance will determine the final grade.

MAJOR CORE COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

Describe basic communication concepts, models and terms.
Distinguish between good and poor topic selection.
Identify, gather, evaluate and use appropriate supporting speech material.
Write thesis/ central idea statements.
Develop speaking notes, full sentence outlines and bibliographies.
Exercise proper delievery tenchinques (voice, face, gestures, movement).
Design, prepare and use presentational aids.
Logically and effectively organize main points of a topic.
Meet general educational critical thinking outcomes. (This course fulfills the HFCC General Education Outcome for critical thinking and problem solving.)
