Education: BS in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of New York State, an MA in Teaching English methods, and a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Wayne State University, Detroit Michigan.


Experience: Dr. Mary Assel is Director of the English Language Institute at HFCC.   She was a key-player in establishing the institute in the fall of 2001.  Her many faceted marketing and pubic relations efforts have helped to expand the program and attract students from 70 different countries.   She has also helped revise the English Division’s ESL classes to reflect the needs of non-native speaking audience.  She is the recipient of the 2007-8 lectureship award at HFCC.  She is an active member in various campus and off-campus committees that embrace all areas in the teaching of English as a second language.  She taught English as a Second language in Africa, the Middle East, and the US for over 30 years. 

Lubna Bazzi, Adjunct Instructor

Education: BA in Languages and International Trade from Eastern Michigan University, MA in Bilingual / Bicultural Education from Eastern Michigan University.

Experience: Lubna Bazzi has been an adjunct instructor at the ELI for the past three consecutive years. As an ESL instructor she has provided an interactive, communicative, and theoretically informed instruction that facilitates language training by utilizing an integrated approach. By doing so, she has successfully prepared students to achieve their college preparation, academic skills, personal development, and cultural experience and growth. Her eight years of experience as the Director of Finance of the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce allowed her to interact and execute her duties in a multicultural diverse environment. Her fluency in Spanish, Arabic, and French, as well as her diverse cultural background, have been an asset to better understand students who are learning a foreign language.

Education: BA and MA degrees in English from Michigan State University

Experience: Ed Demerly created and taught Dearborn Public Schools' first ESL classes in the 1970s; taught three years in Malaysia and Australia; member of MITESOL, Michigan's professional organization of English as a second language teachers, and has over twenty-five years of experience as an ESL teacher.

Rosemary Miketa, Adjunct Instructor

Education: B.ED in teaching English from Monash University and a M.A. in Media Communications from La Trobe University. Both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies were completed in Melbourne, Australia.

Experience: Rosemary Miketa is a fully qualified teacher in English, Literature and the Performing Arts. She is an Adjunct Lecturer for the English Language Institute and has taught a wide range of competency levels.  Rosemary has also worked extensively abroad for the past 17 years, in countries such as Australia, Spain and the U.K and has diversified her teaching methodologies to encompass computer based learning for teaching English as a Second Language. She is also proficient in a number of online portals to teach English for Baker College Online and the HFCC.

Education: BA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poland , an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Madonna University .

Experience: Monika Oery has been teaching ESL for several years both in the US and Europe ( Poland and Austria ). She is currently an ESL instructor at HFCC and other local Colleges. As part of her interest in academic writing, she presented “The ESL Writing Lab: Pathways to a writing community” at MITESOL Conference in 2007. She believes that her personal experience as a second language learner and professional preparation provides her an outstanding understanding and determination to help others achieve proficiency in English as a Second Language.

Education: BA in Italian and Classical Civilization from the University of Michigan and an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Eastern Michigan University

Experience: Danielle Valentini is an ESL Instructor at HFCC and Oakland Community College. She served as co-editor of the MITESOL newsletter for two years and is involved with different ESL organizations. She has been working in this field for over 6 years and has taught in the US as well as in Peru. Her experience working and traveling abroad has helped her with establishing a classroom environment where the students feel comfortable with learning but at the same time challenged.

Education:  Masters of Linguistics/ English Language and Literature, Eastern Michigan University; Bachelors of Fine Art, English Michigan University; Secondary Teaching Certification in English and Art, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI.

Experience:  PaTricia Lloyd has taught English to both native and second language students.  Currently, she is teaching: community-based ESL at the University of Michigan Northwood Housing Program; TOEFL at HFCC; Accent Reduction at Schoolcraft College.  She has taught various levels of ESL. She has studied Japanese and participated in a Japanese Language Homestay Program in Kobe, Japan.  PaTrica fingerpicks a mean guitar, is a passionate gardener, and does professional level painting in her spare time. 

Kristian Stewart

Education: B.S. in English Education at Indiana University  
Bloomington; Master of Arts in Language Education from Indiana  
University at Bloomington.

Experience: Kristian has been teaching English since 1997. Throughout  
this time, she has taught middle school Language Arts, created an  
intensive writing program for seventh grade summer school students,  
taught EFL for two summers in China, and lived in Europe for seven  
years, instructing ESL in both Italy and Germany. Currently, in  
addition to working with the English Language Institute at Henry Ford,  
Kristian is a faculty member of the Writing Center at the University  
of Michigan-Dearborn where she instructs Composition and Rhetoric. In  
her free time, Kristian is an ESL teacher for PALS International, a  
position that pairs her with Bosch expats from Germany. Lastly,  
Kristian has a passion for travel and realizes that by getting out and  
experiencing the world that she can better connect, communicate, and  
instruct her students.

Carole Lowell

Education: BS in Education, MA in Teaching English to Speakers of a Second Language

Experience:  Carole Lowell holds an M.A. in TESOL and remains a Michigan-certified teacher, highly qualified to teach English and ESL. Carole has taught at HFCC’s ELI for three years where she has had the pleasure of teaching many levels of English language learners from newcomers to our country to advanced level students.  She brings a wide range of multi-cultural experience to the ELI, including a history of teaching many different age groups with varying English language proficiency levels. At another local community college, Carole enjoys teaching ESL classes and developmental reading/critical thinking classes for both native speakers and speakers of a second language.  In addition, she works part-time at a local language learning center instructing a variety of ESL classes. Like everyone at the ELI, Carole counts her success by her students’ language learning growth. Carole continues to be excited each time former students drop by to share their latest classroom and career accomplishments with us.

Education: BA in Economics from the University of Michigan and an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Madonna University

Experience: Carolyn is an ESL Instructor at HFCC, Oakland Community College, and University of Detroit Mercy. She is a member of MITESOL and has presented at its annual conference. Before becoming an ESL teacher, she spent 20 years as a computer programmer and analyst. Her experience of many years as an adult student, juggling work, school, and family, as well as her experience in the business world, helps her to establish a rapport with her students and assist them in learning the English they need, whether for work, community, or higher education.

Elizabeth Powell

Education: Elizabeth Powell earned a Master's degree in English from Wayne State University in 1999 and is currently completing certification in teaching English as a Second Language at Wayne State University.  She received teaching certification in English, history, and political science at Madonna University in 2006.  She also has a B.A. from Western Michigan University in English and Public Administration.

Experience: Elizabeth has taught at the English Language Institute since April. She also taught Eng 093, Eng 131, and Eng 132 for three years here at Henry Ford Community College.  Her other teaching experiences include teaching ESL at Fordson High School in Dearborn, and guest teaching in Dearborn, Northville, and Plymouth-Canton.  Overall, Elizabeth has about ten years teaching experience with diverse populations.  For the past two years, Elizabeth has been part of a team at Fordson High School that administers the State of Michigan ELPA test.  Elizabeth's unique teaching experiences have prepared her to be a successful teacher who understands her students' educational needs at their various levels of English Lang usage Proficiency.  Elizabeth is committed to empowering her students to reach their academic and professional goals.

Education:  MA in teaching languages (English emphasis) from the University of Southern Mississippi, BA in Spanish literature from Wayne State University

Experience: Jason has worked at Oakland Community College for the last 10 years. During this time, he has also worked at Madonna University, Lawrence Technological University, and Wayne State University. As part of his training to become an ESL teacher, Jason spent some time in Spain earning a Trinity College teaching certificate and teaching ESL in Barcelona. His experience as a teacher has allowed him to become a quality teacher of all skills involved with language learning and a teacher who has success helping students reach their goals.

Kathleen Smith, Adjunct Instructor

Education:  BA and MA degrees in French Language and Literature from the University of Michigan.  Minors in English, Spanish, Social Studies and Art.  Language study in Avignon and Aix en Provence, France.  Middle Eastern Studies at Ohio State University. Certified in secondary education by the State of Michigan.

Experience:  Kathleen is currently teaching in the English Language Institute at Henry Ford Community College.  She was an educator in the Detroit Public Schools for over 30 years.  During her teaching career, she had an opportunity to serve as a writing consultant, write and perform in a TV series, and serve on book-selection and curriculum committees.  At HFCC, she appreciates the resources that allow her to assess her students' needs and individualize instruction.
