English Language Institute Courses
The following courses are currently available through the English Language Institute.
In the future, we also plan to offer additional courses.
ELI 001- Integrated Grammar, Writing, Reading, and Listening
This course is very elementary in nature. Students will work on sentence structure and length, reading, writing, conversing, and vocabulary building. Much of the work will be done in groups, thus allowing students to practice oral communication. There is special emphasis on the use of computer software and the web. Students will role-play and use microphones to improve their pronunciation via software video clips and true-to-life activities.
ELI 002- Integrated Grammar, Writing, Reading, and Listening
This course is designed for non-native speakers of English who need to improve speaking, writing, and listening skills. The focus of this course will be on vocabulary, sentence structure, and conversational English. There is special emphasis on the use of computer software and the web. Students will role-play and use microphones to improve their pronunciation via software video clips and true-to-life activities.
ELI 003- Integrated Grammar, Writing, Reading, and Listening
This course is designed to introduce students to the parts of speech, sentence variety, paragraph reading, communication in social situations, and cross-cultural differences. Students will have the opportunity to share their views in discussions that revolve around transference and language acquisition. There is special emphasis on the use of computer software and the web. Students will role-play and use microphones to improve their pronunciation via software video clip and true-to-life activities.
ELI 004- Integrated Grammar, Writing, Reading, and Listening
This course is designed for students who need improvement in sentence structure, reading and listening comprehension. There is intensive writing practice to improve sentence variety and vocabulary usage. Students will be introduced to paragraph writing and will have the opportunity to respond orally and in writing to the contents of reading passages and conversations. There is special emphasis on the use of computer software and the web. Students will role-play and use microphones to improve their pronunciation via software video clips and true-to-life activities.
ELI 005- (equivalent to English 078/091)
Students may receive six non-transferable college credits
This course emphasizes intermediate-level college preparatory reading and writing skills to prepare students for ENG 081/092. Students practice study systems, memory strategies, test preparation skills, and organizational skills while improving vocabulary, dictionary skills, understanding of idioms, and spelling. Students practice comprehension skills such as distinguishing general and specific terms, recognizing main ideas, and drawing conclusions. With frequent writing assignments, this course stresses grammatical accuracy, oral and written sentence patterns, and the basic principles and types of paragraph writing. There is special emphasis on the use of computer software and the web and the use of near-native speech.
ELI 006- (equivalent to English 081/092)
Students may receive six non-transferable college credits
This course is designed to provide college preparatory reading and writing instruction at an advanced level to prepare students for ENG 131. Students learn note taking and test preparation skills and practice specialized reading in social science, literature, and mathematics. Reading instruction also focuses on making inferences, retaining concepts, organizing facts, and making judgments. A major objective of the course is to prepare students to write college-level expository essays free from major sentence structure errors, faulty agreement problems, and inappropriate diction. Students continue their study of troublesome structures such as noun clauses, infinitive phrases, and conditional expressions. Use of the computer and the web receive special emphasis. Students speak and understand at a near-native level.
ELI 007- TOEFL Preparation, Test Taking Skills
May require placement testing prior to enrollment. Practice in grammar, speaking, listening, writing, and reading comprehension; test-taking skills and strategies to help improve TOEFL test scores required by most universities. The class involves computer instruction and instructor evaluation.
ELI 009- Pronunciation and Conversation for the Non-Native Speaker
A three-credit – non-transferable developmental course to improve pronunciation and conversational skills of non-native speakers who already have at least intermediate level fluency in English. This course is especially designed for professionals and those students who have learned English primarily from textbooks and who have had little opportunity for oral practice.
ELI 010- PCAT Pre-Pharmacy Preparation, Test Taking Skills
The Pharmacy College Admissions Test course (PCAT) is a two-credit non-transferable course designed to help students acquire the skills and abilities needed to excel and succeed in the PCAT test. About half of the 83 pharmacy schools in the United States currently require or recommend the PCAT for admissions. It is designed to improve the English skills of non-native speakers who already have at least intermediate level fluency in English. The course will help to expand students’ knowledge of words and the relationships between them, and to enhance their reading comprehension of relatively short passages of science-oriented non-fiction. Students will practice composition skills to meet the requirement of the writing section of the PCAT. Offered Spring Semester only.
ELI 012 Business Communication
This non-credit developmental course is designed to improve the English business communication skills of non-native speakers. The course will expand students' knowledge in cultural diversity and socializing, cross-cultural understanding, making presentations, the language of meetings, writing business letters, and negotiation. Students will be able to enhance their listening, reading comprehension, and writing skills. The skills learned form this course will be useful for those preparing for employment and for those already employed who have a need to improve their professional communication and comprehension skills.
ELI 014 Advanced Reading and Vocabulary
This three-credit non-transferable course is designed to provide ESL college preparatory reading and vocabulary review geared to meet the needs of the high-intermediate and advanced students prior to taking ENG 131. The course will enable students to review and reinforce their vocabulary skills and understanding of idioms and expressions. The course will encourage students to read and appreciate essays, short stories, and novels written by a variety of American authors.
ELI 015 Advanced Grammar and Spelling
This three-credit non-transferable course is designed to provide ESL college preparatory grammar and spelling instruction at an advanced level. Students learn basic and complex rules of spelling English words. Instruction also focuses on grammatical structures that are particularly troublesome for second language learners of English.
