Henry Ford Community College has been honored by the National Science Foundation as a community college that demonstrates "exemplary activities" in the area of K-12 teacher preparation. Strong course and program development are the foundation of the Pre-Education Programs at HFCC. Specifically, courses of study have been developed in collaboration with four-year colleges and universities thus providing a beneficial, transferable curriculum. Also, recognizing the importance of early classroom experiences, some teacher preparation classes require students to observe or interact in K-12 school settings which allows them to sample a variety of field experiences.
The cooperative learning environment designed to nurture and enable prospective teachers to achieve to the best of their abilities also was cited as exemplary. Coordinated scheduling allows students to create compact schedules and encourages a community atmosphere among the pre-education majors. As a result, students create learning communities which are social and educational support systems.
HFCC provides numerous support services such as an on campus child care center for students with children, the Future Teachers' Association which provides information about the teaching career, the path to a teaching career, and programs at local universities, and Partners Plus which provides mentoring, tutoring, and support for minority students.
Additional exemplary activities cited by NSF include partnerships with universities and K-12 districts, programs that transfer to teacher-training institutions with little or no loss of credit, and programs that include professional courses.
Henry Ford Community College provides a strong foundation for students pursuing a career in education by providing the first 60 credit hours of a Bachelors degree, which include general education courses, teaching major and minor courses, and professional courses that transfer to most teacher training institutions with little or no loss of credit.
