LRC 109, Section 01, a Learning Community of ENG 131 and SOC 131

Thursday, ENG 131 from 11:10 a.m. - 12:50 p.m. and SOC 131 from 1:30 - 3:10 p.m.

What is a Learning Community?  A Learning Community is an integrated approach in teaching that allows students to take two courses together with instructors who work cooperatively to promote student learning and success.

Why is this Learning Community targeted to African-American male students?  Nationally, African-American males have the lowest retention rate of any other males who attend college; many begin college, but very few achieve a college credential (degree).  HFCC is dedicated to the success of all its students and believes that this is a great way to support the retention and success of our African-American male students.

Although this Learning Community is intended for underrepresented males (African-American), all HFCC students are eligible to register.

ENG 248, Section 70, African-American Literature

Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:40-7:20 p.m. Prerequisite: ENG 131

This dynamic literature course transfers to the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Wayne State, and Eastern Michigan.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  English 248 is a survey course that traces African-American literature from its 18th Century beginnings to the modern era.  This course emphasizes reading selected pieces of literature for critical analysis of representative texts in all genres of literature: poetry, slave narrative, fiction, essay, and drama.  Furthermore, we will examine the role that African-American literature has played in defining African-Americans in America.  Beginning with the 18th Century and on to the 19th Century, we will examine literature that has established a literary tradition for African-Americans that deal with such issues as Black humanity and the quest for freedom.  We will then move into the 20th Century where we will look at literature that speaks of the social and political inequalities of Blacks in America.  Beside the required readings in the text, certain discussions will be complimented by short films, documentaries, music selections, as well as guest speakers on particular periods in African-American literature.

TRANSFER CREDIT:

  • WSU transfers ENG 248 as ENG 2390 (direct equivalence).
  • UMD transfers ENG 248 as the equivalent of ENG 239, a humanities elective.
  • EMU transfers ENG 248 as the equivalent of LITR 160 and counts it as a Global Awareness / US Diversity requirement.
