Non-Traditional Seminar for Women in Technology

10/29/2009

To help women explore careers in non-traditional fields, Henry Ford Community College's University Transfer, Advising and Career Counseling Center will hold its annual Non-Traditional Seminar for Women in Technology on Wednesday, Nov. 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ghafari Conference Room in the Technology Building on HFCC's main campus, located at 5101 Evergreen Road in Dearborn.

The event is free and includes a continental breakfast and lunch with door prizes. The seminar will highlight technical programs at HFCC, including architecture and construction technology, energy technology, computer information systems, industrial drafting, as well as criminal justice and other areas, according to Diane Green, associate dean of HFCC's University Transfer, Advising and Career Counseling Center. For the first time, the seminar also will highlight HFCC's Hospitality Studies program.

'It's important to raise awareness that these are viable career choices for women,' says Green. 'This is also an opportunity for women to come together and talk about common issues and concerns about the sometimes difficult decision associated with making a career choice.'

The seminar will feature guest speakers, including faculty from the HFCC's Energy Technology and Criminal Justice programs.

'The seminar will help women be able to visually see as well as hear about the programs at HFCC,' says Green. 'Participants will see what skills they will learn within the programs and what occupations they will be trained to do. They will walk away with a lot of rich information that will hopefully help them make realistic career choices as it relates to them.'

The seminar will be divided into half-hour sessions for participants unable to stay for the entire conference, according to Green, who encourages women to stay for the entire seminar if their schedules allow.

This is the fourth year that HFCC has offered the fall Non-Traditional Seminar for Women in Technology.

'The evaluations from participants each year are always extremely positive,' notes Green. 'Participants found the events to be rich with information and extremely useful. If a person can walk away with that richness, then we've accomplished our goal.'
