Our mission is to teach students the skills needed to meet the reading, writing, and critical thinking requirements of the college curriculum. These skills will help students succeed in upper-division college courses and in their careers.  

Through courses in reading, students will learn how to read in a variety of disciplines.  Through courses in basic writing, students will learn how to write fundamental sentences, paragraphs, and essays.  Through courses in college-level composition, students will learn and practice 1) how to develop, write, and support their own ideas clearly, logically, and persuasively by using rhetorical modes, 2) how to incorporate research material in a documented paper, and 3) how to analyze and evaluate a variety of texts.  Through courses in literature that examine works of excellence from a variety of cultures, students will enrich their understanding of literature and enhance their ability to critically analyze literary texts. Through the creative writing course, students will learn to write in several genres of creative literature.  Through courses in foreign language, students will learn to read, comprehend, write, and speak languages other than their own in the context of the target cultures. Through the business and technical writing course, students will learn how to adapt generic college-level writing skills, critical thinking skills, and research skills to a range of professional rhetorical situations.
