Computer Literacy Graduation Requirements for General Education

Computer Literacy

The Computer Literacy General Education requirement at Henry Ford Community College states that all graduates will be able to:

  • Utilize a computer and its software to accomplish practical tasks, including word processing and Internet
    usage.

Computer Literacy Degree Requirement

The Computer Literacy requirement for the associate's degree requirement can be satisfied by successful completion of an approved Computer Literacy Course (see approved courses below) or passage of the Computer Literacy Test. To take the Computer Literacy Test, students enroll in CLT 100, which meets once to administer the test.

Computer Literacy Test

Students who do not take one of the approved courses in their program of study may elect to take the Computer Literacy Test by enrolling for CLT 100 - Computer Literacy Test.

Students enroll for CLT 100 like any other course, but it meets only once for one hour for the testing process. CLT 100 has no tuition charge, but does have a lab fee of $30.

Students who do not pass the test may retake it or take one of the approved CLR courses.

The Computer Literacy Test (CLT) is a 73-question test that is taken on a computer. The questions address the competencies listed below.

You have one hour to complete the CLT, and you have the opportunity to skip questions and return to those questions later in the testing period.  You will receive immediate feedback as to your test score.  The passing score at the present time is 80 percent.

Competencies include:

  1. Operate basic PC hardware, including common input, output, and storage devices.
  2. Perform file management tasks, including finding, organizing, saving, copying, and printing files.
  3. Send and open e-mail, including attachments.
  4. Use basic word processing functions to prepare a document that incorporates a variety of formatting options.
  5. Locate information on the Internet, identify appropriate search terms, download files, and use a search engine effectively.
  6. Prepare a spreadsheet that incorporates basic formulas and a variety of formatting options.
  7. Create and view a slideshow using basic presentation software functions.
  8. Identify issues and recommendations related to computer ethics and netiquette.
  9. Recognize common threats to computer security and privacy, such as viruses, phishing, and identity theft; and identify methods of prevention.
