HFCC is now Smoke Free
On January 1, 2012, Henry Ford Community College became smoke free at all three campus locations, which include the main campus, the Dearborn Heights campus, and the East Campus. HFCC joined hundreds of colleges and universities across the nation that have taken this important step. Providing a smoke free campus promotes a healthy environment in which students, faculty, administrators, and staff can learn and work. A smoke free campus also sets the example that Henry Ford Community College is committed to wellness and supports a healthy campus.
Regionally, the University of Michigan including the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses, Michigan State University, and Oakland University are now smoke free. Area community colleges that are smoke free include Washtenaw, Jackson, Monroe, and Lansing. Colleges and universities have taken this measure in response to the Surgeon General's 2006 report, "The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke: A Report of the Surgeon General." This report states that secondhand smoke is a preventable and significant cause of illness and death in the United States, and that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Clearly, the well being of everyone on campus must be a top priority and going smoke free is an important step in this effort.
During January and February, HFCC will promote an awareness campaign to help students comply with the policy and to inform them about free resources to help them quit or reduce smoking. These resources include organizations that provide support groups and clinics that provide smoking cessation programs. The resources include:
