Martin Luther King Day




Honor the philosophy and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in a one-day service project to help local charities and/ or entering a writing contest.
Volunteer on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
HFCC's campus is closed on January 19, 2009 in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. So take time that day to volunteer with one of many local organizations, such as senior centers, schools, a Native American agency, food charities and more.
You’ll be working side by side with students, staff and faculty from HFCC and other colleges. HFCC's partners include the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Madonna and Lawrence Technological Universities and the United Way for Southeastern Michigan.
How to Volunteer
View the the volunteer opportunities (Excel file ) then download the registration form, (Word document), fill it out and return it to the Student Activities Center, Room C-105.
You can also sign up at registration tables in the Student Center on November 17, 18, and 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and in the Liberal Arts building on November 18 and 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and November 20th and 24th from 3 to 6 p.m.
Writing Contest
Currently enrolled students may submit an essay, poem or speech using the theme: "Let us be concerned about others because we are dependent on others.”
The theme was taken from Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life, which was delivered at New Covenant Baptist Church in Chicago on April 9, 1967.
The writing must be typed and related to Martin Luther King Jr. and/ or community service using the selected theme. Each submission will be judged on originality, grammar, artistic value, and passion. Deadline for submissions is December 10, 2008.
First and second place winners will win a $100 and $50 HFCC gift certificate respectively. The first place winner will recite his/her writing at the MLK Community Service Day Reflection Program on January 19.
