Women's Basketball

 

In 1976, the first women’s Hawk basketball team took the floor.  Matt Godfrey coached the team to a conference championship in the 1997-98 season. The current Head Coach is Bob Belf and the Assistant Coach is Bill Borg.

Conference games are all double-headers and precede the men’s games. All Hawk home basketball games are played on the main campus. The Women’s Basketball season runs from October 1 – March 10.  Students are admitted to games free with an HFCC ID card.  Admission is $3.00 for adults without an HFCC ID card and children 8 and up.

The Coaching Staff

In 2005-06, veteran Women's Basketball Coach Bob Belf, returns for a second tour of duty at Henry Ford. Belf previously coached in 2001-02 while also serving as girl's basketball coach at Bishop Foley High School. He spent 6 seasons at Foley producing two league championships and 2 district titles. Belf was a teacher at Foley for 10 years.

This time around Belf will specifically concentrate on rebuilding the Hawk program. Coach Belf has 94 career high school wins at 3 separate programs in 8 seasons of prep coaching. Belf also has many years of college experience including serving as the interim women's coach at Macomb College for the 1998-99 season. Belf has been a D1 assistant as University of Louisville, a D2 head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College and built the program from scratch at NAIA Madonna University.

Belf is a 9 year resident of Berkley and a lifetime metropolitan Detroit resident. He graduated from Albion College in 1980 and received his Master's degree from Marygrove College in 2005.

His wife, Veronica, is also an ex-Varsity coach having served at Lake Shore High School for 4 years and she is a long time teacher at East Detroit High School. Together they have 2 children: daughter Rachel (3) and newborn son Robbie.

Assistant Coach, Rob Sauter, being out of coaching for a season, joins the Henry Ford staff with his focus on recruiting the downriver area. Rob left coaching Riverview HS after many years of success to focus more on watching his own kid's progress in athletics.

Rob is a 1979 Albion College graduate and a teacher of U.S. History at Riverview HS.
