On Campus Employment Information

You must be enrolled in a full course of study during the academic year. You may work up to 20 hours/week on-campus during the academic year, full-time on-campus during vacation periods (on-campus means work performed on the school's premises). There is no fee, and no authorization from USCIS is required. There is no central hiring office for student jobs. You should visit the office you are interested in and ask for information there. Be sure to take a copy of your current semester schedule.

Visits Outside of the United States and their Impact on OPT

It is important to note that immigration regulations state that students must be in valid F-1 status for one consecutive academic year prior to being eligible for practical training. If you depart the United States for five months or longer, after being in the United States in F-1 status for one academic year, you will not be eligible for practical training until you have spent another academic year in F-1 status. Departures from the United States of less than five months have no impact on this provision.

Off campus eligibility to work based on Economic Hardship

You must be in F-1 status for one full academic year. You must have made a “good faith" effort to find employment on-campus. Full-time work is allowed only during semester breaks and annual vacations. Work does not have to relate to field of study. You must demonstrate documented evidence demonstrating severe economic hardship due to unforeseen circumstances.

Required Documentation:

  • I-765
  • Form I-20, passport and Form I-94
  • 2 photos
  • Supporting documentation (Documented evidence of financial hardship)
  • Check or money order

Canadian Citizens

If you are a Canadian citizen, you are required at the port of entry to present your passport or proof of Canadian citizenship along with an I-20 (and evidence of adequate funding for your proposed program of study. You may attend HFCC on a full-time or part- time basis. You will then be issued an I-94 card indicating your student visa status.

NOTE: Canadian students who plan on living in the United States while attending school must fulfill all student visa requirements.
