Welcome Back Students!

Over the summer, much progress has been made on the parking lot project. The parking areas and the perimeter road on the south side of campus have been reconstructed and will be available for the start of classes on Thursday, August 27.

An underground storm water retention system in the southwest corner of campus is well underway. This system, along with a detention pond and bioswales, will significantly improve the quality of the 64 million gallons of rain water that flow from the campus into the Rouge River annually.

When the underground system is finished, parking areas will be built on top of the area. These parking areas will be complete and available for parking on approximately October 15.

Until these areas are complete on approximately October 15, the perimeter road in the southwest corner of campus must remain closed for safety. This means that, if you enter campus through the South Drive, you will not be able to continue on the perimeter road to reach the north side of campus. Conversely, if you enter campus through the North Drive, you will not be able to continue on the perimeter road to reach the south side of campus.

Below you'll find a map that indicates all areas that will be open for student parking and the effective dates. Please see information below that describes the entire multi-year project.

Thank you for your patience during construction and we hope you enjoy the new parking areas.

The main campus parking lot project is, now, underway.

Parking Lot Construction and Map

The reconstruction of the parking lots will take place summer 2009 and  summer 2010.  During summer 2011, the landscaping aspects of the project will be finalized.  Throughout the project, you'll find updates about the project on this page. Below, you'll also find a two links on the page to a webcam that will show live video of the construction.

This summer, the focus will be the south side of campus.

Construction on the south lots has begun and the area must be closed off.  Effective Tuesday, May 26, the perimeter road around campus will be closed from the Child Development Center to the northern edge of the soccer field.  The section to be closed is currently marked by orange construction fencing.  This area will be closed until the start of the fall semester.

Students must use the North Entrance only and park in the north and west lots.  The South Drive will be open only to visitors, staff, and those with children in the Child Development Center.

Parking on campus will be a challenge for the next two summers.  We appreciate your patience.  The project will truly transform the campus and create a pleasant, welcoming environment for students.  We'll keep you informed as we move forward with this truly exciting project.

HFCC parking lot project to improve campus and help local economy

Feb. 24, 2009

Henry Ford Community College’s parking lot and traffic circulation improvement project, set to begin this spring, is welcome news not only for students and visitors, but for southeast Michigan’s economy.

The three-year, $22 million project on the 75-acre main campus in Dearborn includes the redesign and construction of circulation roads, parking areas and service drives and the addition of green space to meet present and future needs of the campus, according to Marge Swan, HFCC vice president and controller.

“We are pleased to announce this project not only to improve the infrastructure of the parking lots and the flow of traffic in and around campus, but also as an important stimulus project for our local economy,” said HFCC President Gail Mee.  “It will put people to work and circulate money through our local economy.”

The project includes reconstruction of all main campus parking lots and correction of many site problems, including heavy clay and lack of an existing base under the lots.  Improvements will be made to the entrances and exits to the campus to improve traffic flow.  Traffic signals and signs will also be improved, and an access road to the recently purchased expansion property on the north side of campus will be added.  An expanded storm water detention system will better protect the Rouge River on the western edge of the campus and comply with new, rigorous standards established by Wayne County and the State of Michigan.

Another important element of the project is the creation of a “green” corridor on the western edge of the campus near the Rouge River to provide a pleasant outdoor destination for students and visitors.  A new landscape design will bring trees, plants and water features to many areas of the campus, which also will serve as outdoor laboratories for science students.

The first phase of the project will begin in April with the reconstruction of the parking lots most in need of improvement, said Swan.

Cost of the project will be funded from HFCC’s fund balance and the sale of general obligation bonds.  State funding is not available for the parking lot improvement project, according to Swan.  The HFCC Board of Trustees has approved the hiring of Carl Walker Parking, Inc. for the professional engineering and consulting services necessary to design and oversee the project.
